Hi, I’m Dominique — the designer and maker behind byDoumBaril.
My Journey into Knitting
Knitting has been anchored in my life since childhood. I was taught by Sister Jacqueline, an Ursuline nun who left an everlasting impression on me. She showed me how to channel my creative energy through the rhythm of the needles—a gift that became a key factor in my academic success.
From Comfort to Resilience
As a teenager, I naturally moved away from the craft, only to return to it years later when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. During her treatments, knitting became my anchor once again. I knitted hundreds of washcloths to pass the time—so many that, to this day, my cupboards are still full of them. After my mother passed away, those needles stayed in my hands as a quiet refuge, a space where I could breathe and slowly heal.
The Birth of byDoumBaril
Ready to move beyond washcloths, I started exploring garments, but I quickly realized how challenging it was to find patterns that truly accounted for different body shapes. Often, standard grading didn't translate well to larger sizes, overlooking how a garment actually drapes or fits on a real silhouette.
Driven by the desire for well-fitting, modern, and genuinely inclusive knitwear, I began designing my own. What started as a personal quest for the perfect fit grew into byDoumBaril. Today, I dedicate myself to creating patterns with meticulous grading, clean lines, and flawless step-by-step guidance. Whether you are taking on a new skill challenge or seeking a soothing project, I want you to feel confident, valued, and incredibly proud of what you create.

More than a business, a family dreaM
Why “byDoumBaril”?
The name of my business is a quiet but deeply meaningful tribute to my mother. While most people encouraged me to pursue academic success, she dreamed of seeing me follow an artistic path. She always believed in my creativity — in making, drawing, expressing. “Doum” was one of her nicknames for me (alongside the less brandable Vieille Crotte). So when I launched this creative adventure — after completing a PhD in economics, of all things — I chose a name that would carry a piece of her with me. With byDoumBaril, I bring together the warmth and meaning she instilled in me, and the precision I’ve honed through years of academic work — so that each pattern is both heartfelt and technically sound.

When it comes to choosing yarn, there is no single right way to do things. I love highlighting local indie dyers and fiber artists who pour their hearts into making incredible, unique products. Supporting our community’s creativity is something deeply close to my heart.
At the same time, I make sure every single one of my patterns can be beautifully knitted with commercial yarns. Knitting should be a sanctuary, not a source of financial stress. Whether you choose a rare hand-dyed skein or an accessible everyday yarn, what matters most is the love and patience you weave into every stitch.
