The Honning Socks are cute, delightfully stretchy socks inspired by the magnificent geometric work of Anna Sudo’s Apis Dorsata. The spark for this design came while roaming the colorful, historic streets of Bergen, Norway—which is why they are affectionately named Honning, the Norwegian word for honey. Worked from the toe up to the cuff, these socks feature an engaging textured pattern running along their entire length.

Technically, the slipped-stitch elements nesting over a smooth stockinette background with garter stitch inserts create beautiful, organic variations that echo the striking, disorderly order of honeycomb hive cells. To ensure maximum durability, this downloadable PDF pattern includes a brilliant wool-saving trick: reinforcing the high-friction zones (the toe and the heel) by holding a strand of silk mohair along with your regular sock yarn. Finished with a neat German Short Row heel, you will achieve a beautifully rounded shape with absolutely no holes.

This cozy design is proudly part of the Bas Bleus Collection. Historically used as a pejorative term to describe learned, intellectual women with literary pursuits, “Bas-Bleu” (Bluestocking) is proudly reclaimed here through a beautiful collection of hand-knit socks that celebrate wit, exploration, and creative spirit.
